After the publication of One Essence, I decided to start posting more Zen poems to the site. Here are recent posts....

Poems

are prose
that you
forever rewrite.
Only when awake--
the dream seen for what it is:
empty of meaning.
Doing yoga
all these years,
the only pose
I know
one day
I'll master
is the Corpse Pose
a fish
lives in water
unseeing of the
water

you live
in the Essence
unmindful of
the Essence

without the water
the fish
would not
be alive

without the Essence
you would
not even be
unmindful
By their fruits...

Yesterday
two
Jehovah's Witnesses
visited
this
impoverished
old man
and stood
at the door
for most of
an hour
talking
about Jesus.

Today
two Presbyterian
women
knocked
and volunteered
their help
with housecleaning,
finishing
an hour later--
with no word
of Jesus.
Om Tat Sat

O, Ramana
There are 27
pictures
of your wisdom head
in the booklet
Purushottama Ramana:
Two of them--
rare--
depict your toothy smile,
your ease with happiness.
Twenty-five more
capture your
deepest teaching:
Your mouth
is shut.
The key to the mystery
is in one letter.
Do you know
which one it is?

When it is present,
duality is.
With it
appears
pain and pleasure
good and bad
life and death
me and not-me
There is silence
when there is
no sound.
There is silence
when there is
no mentation.
But there is
enduring silence
only when there is
tranquility
with what is
present.
The garden full of flowers!
I thought of you. But
here is what I brought--
for us to share.
This.
This...One.

TO-DO LIST

1. Start day with love.
2. Fill day with love.
3. End day with love.
Self-realization
is the neutralizer
of the seven deadly sins:
pride
avarice
gluttony
lust
jealousy
laziness
anger
I think,
therefore I am

condemned.
Don't
speak to me
of "God".
Simply say
"I".
I spent
the evening
reading
good poetry.
Mine.
no quirky name
no forthy title
no gaudy robe
no tired lineage--

God
made cats,
and then
got distracted.
God
plays dice
with the universe

but doesn't
care who wins.
The worst thing
about a peaceful life,
you have nothing
to talk about
when your brother calls.
even in sleep,
the light is on;
the light which
wasn't lit and
won't be extinguished--
a light which
has never known
its opposite
Consumption

In the Forties and Fifties,
the coupons from my aunt's Tarreyton
cigarette packs
were traded--along with a pair of lungs--
for a gorgeous imitation Tiffany lamp
which now illuminates the nightstand
and respirator near her deathbed.
A recent scientifc study
has concluded that--within
variable amounts of time
per individual, and with varying
amounts of discomfort--
100% of persons attended
by a physician
will die.

They want to
know Your address.

I tell them, It's
HERE.

Disappointed,
they want to
travel.
Desiring enlightenment:
once attained,
nothing to show for it.
If
you don't
like the way
your life
is going,
you can
end it.

Is this
a loving universe,
or what!?
In today's market
money
is not a good investment;
peace of mind
pays
higher dividends.

I just want
one thing for you:
emptiness

I just want
one thing for you:
happiness

I just want
one thing for you:
love

(It's all the same thing.)

You are the flute

What is the
